This Readership is now vacant.
The new Reader should arrive in Hong Kong not
later than the beginning of September, 1931. The
appointment will be till the end of December, 1932, in
the first instance, but will be subject to renewal
see para. below.
The selected candidate will have to
be medically examined with regard to his general fitness
for work in Hong Kong.

The candidate selected should not ordinarily
be over 35, but the selection of a man over35 or over
40 need not be regarded as impossible, especially if
such a candidate were particularly well qualified and
prepared to go and work in Hong Kong for a definitely
limited period. Other things being equal an unmarri ed
candidate should be preferred, and capacity and
willingness to play games, especially cricket, should
be regarded as a valuable qualification. The candidate
selected must have taken a first or second class honours
in history at a British University or possess other
academic qualifications which are in the opinion of the
Board of Education definitely equivalent thereto.
Teaching experience is an essential qualification.
Research work or authorship should be regarded as
assets. The Government of Hong Kong recently approached
the University and asked it to undertake a history of
Hong Kong in commemoration of the forthcoming centenary
